There’s something for everyone in the downtown area of Cebu City specifically in Colon Street which is often known as the oldest street in the Philippines. It’s a good place to spend less and have more with its wholesale and retail markets. Shoppers here include people on buy and sell business; bulk buyers who need giveaways for their special occasions; wise buyers who are into latest chick clothes on a cheaper price; fashion designers who are finding textiles and fabrics for their own masterpiece and of course, Christmas shoppers who are looking for gift items, fruits and other food items at budget-friendly prices.
Colon Street stretches out from Caltex (with its own monument—the Colon Street Monument—at the center) to Katipunan Lumber.
Here you’ll see modern shopping malls standing next to some run-down looking stalls. Coming here means not only being brave in taking thick crowds but also putting up with the noise, the killer traffic and the occasional pick-pockets.
Night Market
On a certain period of time, most likely December to January, a Night Market is opened up along Colon Street (from Metro Colon to Colon Street Monument). This is best for people who are only available during night time due to busy schedules and workloads. At the Night Market, everything is set up for you in a very affordable price with the discounts. There’s a variety of stylish shirts and pants, bags on the trend, grooming accessories, and mobile phone accessories. If you ever get tired of shopping, food stalls are also open on the sides. You’ll have a taste of street foods like tempura, fish balls, and barbeque.
Survival Tips
Always wear comfortable foot wear because you’ll surely do a lot of walking. Don’t compete with the shoppers on weekends so it’s best if you avoid those days. Have an organized shopping list ready to know ahead what are you looking for since it might be hard for you to decide on what to buy when you get there (Surely!). Compare prices first but don’t forget to take note on the stalls because if you won’t, you might just be wandering around a maze. Pile up your extra time and effort for searching items you desire at the lowest price. Remember, patience is a virtue. Don’t forget to keep sight on your valuable or better yet, leave your important belongings at home so that you won’t lose them on your journey towards buying something you can call “sulit”.
